Paternity
A Respected Nashville, Tennessee, Law FirmHandling Paternity MattersEstablishing paternity is more than just claiming that someone is the father. As children are increasingly born out of wedlock, an increasing number of unwed mothers and fathers are seeking to legally establish parentage. At Cynthia J. Bohn & Associates, we are committed to helping mothers, fathers, and children legally establish paternity. Experienced Paternity LawyersThere are a number of rights and obligations that go along with establishing paternity. Child support payments, inheritance rights, visitation, and child custody all come into play once a father is determined to be the father. The Tennessee paternity statute lays out the procedure for establishing paternity, the liability of the father once paternity has been established, the process for parentage testing, and a way for a father to voluntarily acknowledge parentage. Tennessee uses DNA parentage testing to prove paternity. To initiate the paternity process a Complaint for Parentage must be filed. This complaint compels the father to submit to a DNA test. If the DNA test shows that there is 99.97% or greater possibility of paternity, the court presumes the man is the father. If the man's genes do not match the child's on at least two different genes, the probability of parentage is zero. We work closely with you to help establish or disprove paternity. We recognize that a declaration of paternity can have a significant impact on the lives of the mother, child, and alleged father. In one paternity suit, White v. Armstrong, we obtained post-judgment relief from an order requiring a father to support a child who was not his own. Regardless of the issues involved, we are committed to providing aggressive straight-forward representation in paternity matters.
