We can help facilitate home studies through Jewish Family Services, assist with fingerprint checks, and complete and file paperwork with the court. When an adoption requires the termination of parental rights, we work with you to obtain a consensual release of parental rights or prove to the court that a good faith effort was made to locate the birthparent. It is important to know that an adoption cannot be finalized for six months after the petition is filed with the court. Once an adoption is final the parent whose parental rights have been severed is no longer required to pay child support. However, the obligation to pay past due child support continues. Regardless of the reason for the adoption, we are dedicated to ensuring that adoptive families receive the legal support they need throughout the adoption process.
