Tennessee Lawyer Ethics RulesTennessee Rules of Professional ConductOn August 27, 2002, the Tennessee Supreme Court approved new Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct (TRPC) for attorneys practicing in this state. This decision was the culmination of seven years of work on the revision of Tennessee's lawyer ethics rules led by Tennessee attorneys and judges and the Supreme Court spent almost two years soliciting and receiving comments, holding oral argument, and considering the proposed revisions. The new rules go into effect March 1, 2003. Since 1970, the standards of ethical conduct for Tennessee attorneys has been governed by rules patterned after the 1969 American Bar Association Model Code of Professional Responsibility. The new Rules are patterned after the ABA's Model Rules of Professional Conduct, first issued by the ABA in 1983. Versions of the ABA Model Rules have now been adopted in 45 American jurisdictions, now including Tennessee. The new Rules largely follow the ABA Model Rules, but do include some modifications reflecting particular Tennessee practices, statutory law, and established decisions.
