Child support is a payment designed to ensure that children benefit from the resources both parents can provide. When it is awarded in Tennessee divorces cases, it is typically paid to the primary residential parent by the alternative residential parent, and is normally paid until the child turns eighteen or graduates from high school, whichever occurs last.
While several factors contribute to determining the amount of support to be paid, Tennessee guidelines are generally based upon income. Factors considered in making decisions about support payments include:
- The gross monthly income of each parent
- Health insurance, medical care and daycare costs for the children
- Educational costs, including tuition
- Number of days per year spent by each parent with the child
- Additional minor children residing in the household, or at another household
